Long before our time, attempts were made to drain the Wetland for agriculture. Drains were dug through the full length leading to a pipeline located on the Western end leading to the River. These works were totally ineffective and had largely ceased to function by 1974 when some of our members first purchased land. However in 1979 new works were carried out which completely drained the Wetland in all but flood conditions. Attempts were made by us to restore natural hydrology but these were opposed by the Council and were rendered ineffective. Gradually since that time works have deteriorated again but natural full levels are still only reached in floods. Efforts continue to restore natural hydrology continue.
